fifteen Computers in the Classroom

I’m hungry, in class, and bored. And, it’s almost 8:00 p.m.—which is too late for class. I’d rather be eating or sitting on concrete. I look up ever so often from my MacBook Pro and continue typing as if I am taking notes about what the professor is saying. Sometimes I cock my head to the side, as if I’m slightly confused, so he clarifies, but I’m not really sure what he’s saying. Everyone around me has computers out, four are on email and one Facebook. The rest are angled wrong so I can’t see. Basically the professor is talking to the four people sitting in the front of the class—there’s only about twenty of us in here. I’ve been tweeting all class, looking at blogs, scanning my email to prepare for a meeting later tonight. I wonder if he knows. He probably does, as most others in my class are not very good at the looking at the professor and typing and nodding their head action.

What am I saying? Multitasking is something that my generation is constantly doing and advertisers know about, but are we actually multitasking? Yes, I’m in class, but I may as well be sitting in my living room. I’m not really sure what my professor has been saying for the last hour, so maybe I’m only single-tasking in a different location with stuff going on around me.

Now we’re watching The Colbert Report in class, everyone is looking up watching. Maybe class should be more like this, I would learn more. That’s why I like advertising classes.

*This is a media literacy class, but I think it is seriously missing some info of other non-traditional media which this class is very “literate” in—proven by the number of students on Facebook and Google-ing the “facts” that are being given by the Professor. Maybe we should teach this class. 6 Minutes after class officially ended, he’s done, we’re done. I’m out.

**I only do this in incredibly boring classes. If you’re one of my professors reading this, you are probably exciting enough for me to be paying attention in class. Congrats! I appreciate the entertaining teaching style!
